*** House passes resolution rebuking the president on Iraq
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Democratic-controlled House issued a symbolic rejection of President Bush's decision to deploy more troops to Iraq on Friday, opening an epic confrontation between Congress and commander in chief over an unpopular war that has taken the lives of more than 3,100 U.S. troops.
The vote on the nonbinding measure was 246-182. ...
*** House Passes Defeatist Resolution: 17 Republicans Join the White Flag Caucus N Z Bear (Hat tip: Michelle Malkin)

The House just completed voting, and has approved 246-182 the Democrats' defeatist resolution. This was expected: but the good news is, the 40-60 Republican defectors that the Democrats had been predicting failed to materialize. Only seventeen Republicans voted for the resolution --- and two Democrats broke ranks to vote against it.
First, let us recognize the two Democrats who did the right thing:
And now, the seventeen Republicans who decided today to end their political careers:

I just called Congressman Johnson's office to make sure he knows I'll be working to get him defeated in the primary preceding the 2008 election.

Lieberman Warns of Potential Constitutional Crisis over Iraq Urges Unity in War Against Islamist Extremism
WASHINGTON, D.C. — In a statement on the Senate floor today concerning the non-binding Iraq resolution, Senator Lieberman stated:
“The non-binding resolution before us today, we all know, is only a prologue. That is why the fight over it – procedural and substantive – over these past weeks has been so intense. It is the first skirmish in an escalating battle that threatens to consume our government over many months ahead, a battle that will neither solve the sprawling challenges we face in Iraq nor strengthen our nation to defeat the enemies of our security throughout the world from Islamist extremists. That is to say, in our war against the terrorists that attacked us.
We still have a choice not to go down this path – it’s a choice that goes beyond the immediate resolution before the Senate – a chance to step back from the brink and find a better way to express and arbitrate our opinion, and I hope we will seize the moment and take that chance.”

FINAL VOTE RESULTS FOR ROLL CALL 99
*** Dems & White Flag Republicans disgrace themselves Posted By Uncle Jimbo
Since you can't filibuster disrespectful, idiocies that give aid and comfort to our enemies in the House, the Democrats and some White Flag Republicans have disgraced themselves by voting for "The piss on the troop's heads and tell them it's raining" resolution.
Politics is an inherently shameful undertaking at best, but this is low. Passing a measure that tells our troops, our enemies and our people that Congress wants to be on record as both supporting the troops and not supporting their mission is truly low. What disgusting drivel, what gutless buffoonery, what complete, spineless, political posturing.
Harridan of the House Pelosi squawks:
"The passage of this legislation will signal a change in direction in Iraq that will end the fighting and bring our troops home," she vowed.
It will do nothing of the sort you moistened bint, it simply reminds us how bereft of character, patriotism and honor you are. ...
*** Democrats Pass Resolution While Surge Goes Into Effect Ed Morrissey
The Democrats passed the House resolution objecting to the new surge strategy in Iraq even as American soldiers began to apply it in earnest. House leadership had predicted a wave of Republican support for the non-binding proposal, but in the end they could only get 17 Republicans to cross the aisle -- and managed to lose two of their own:
After four days of emotional debate over the extent of presidential powers in wartime and the proper role of Congress, the House of Representatives adopted a resolution today denouncing President Bush’s plan to send more American troops to Iraq. ...
This was an unprecedented move by Congress to interfere in the command of American troops during wartime. Congress has threatened to cut off funding before to end conflicts and deployments, but no one can find an example of Congress scolding the President over a specific strategy while the military implements it. It declares a military operation in its opening stages a defeat before it has a chance to succeed, a mind-boggling statement, and one entirely performed for partisan purposes.
Seventeen Republicans voted for the resolution. A new joint project, the Victory Caucus, lists the GOP Representatives who voted to declare a defeat before the Army and Marine Corps have entered the field in full. One of them comes from Minnesota -- Jim Ramstad, who can be reached at 202-225-2871 or by e-mail here.
Why are we listing these members? The Victory Caucus wants to ensure that we find suitable primary opponents for them in 2008. If you live in their districts, we need your help to find people who either support the mission or do something tangible to end it, and not to sit on the sidelines and try to run a war by complaints.
One point lost in today's vote is that the surge strategy has had an immediate impact on the situation in Baghdad, although the US underscored the fact that the operation is stil in its preliminary stages: ...
