New Surrendercrat Strategy: Betray The Troops -- Update 13

Words from the last of the sane Democrats:

The Choice on Iraq
"I appeal to my colleagues in Congress to step back and think carefully about what to do next." -- Sen. Joseph Lieberman

Two months into the 110th Congress, Washington has never been more bitterly divided over our mission in Iraq. The Senate and House of Representatives are bracing for parliamentary trench warfare--trapped in an escalating dynamic of division and confrontation that will neither resolve the tough challenges we face in Iraq nor strengthen our nation against its terrorist enemies around the world.

What is remarkable about this state of affairs in Washington is just how removed it is from what is actually happening in Iraq. There, the battle of Baghdad is now under way. A new commander, Gen. David Petraeus, has taken command, having been confirmed by the Senate, 81-0, just a few weeks ago. And a new strategy is being put into action, with thousands of additional American soldiers streaming into the Iraqi capital.

Congress thus faces a choice in the weeks and months ahead. Will we allow our actions to be driven by the changing conditions on the ground in Iraq--or by the unchanging political and ideological positions long ago staked out in Washington? What ultimately matters more to us: the real fight over there, or the political fight over here? ...

“Once-Promising Strategy”
Jules Crittenden

Murtha trips over shark, falls under bus as other Dems look on idly. The funny part about this Washington Post article is the way it appears to be suggesting that if Murtha had just sprung his troop-undercutting plan by surprise next week, or if Democrats had leapt to his defense, his “once promising strategy” might still have promise.

More than anything, this article shows how the Dem Cong is living up to its promise, and why a number of conservatives were not alarmed by the outcome of the November election.  After all, it prompted the overdue departure of Rumsfeld and brought the thus-far successful surge strategy. It has also allowed the “once promising” Democratic strategy to play out, which thus far has only improved public attitudes toward supporting President Bush on Iraq.

Anti-war cannibalism
Michelle Malkin

The Sheehanistas are turning on Sen. Patty Murray in Washington state over the war. Allah's got the video of Murray getting chewed out by Evergreen State lefties, who are pushing impeachment legislation. My old Seattle Times colleague David Postman reports on the panic the measure is causing among Beltway Democrats:

Sen. Patty Murray and Congressman Jay Inslee are lobbying legislators to cancel this week's hearing on a resolution calling on Congress to investigate and consider impeaching President George Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney. Inslee and Murray, both Democrats who voted against the war, think state lawmakers holding hearings and voting on impeachment is a distraction from what Democrats are doing in Congress, including their efforts to end the war.  ...

Yep. More on that in today's Washington Post, which has a parallel article on the Dems' Murtha headache.

Dems Surrender On Iraq Surrender
A J Strata

The Democrats caved today on their insane plans to run from Iraq, probably due to the fact the country was turning against them (polls here and here) and probably in no small part to the warning shot Joe Lieberman sent across their creaky bow today. Needless to say, it is the Democrats who are now in full retreat. ...

Trouble In Paradise
John Hindedraker

The Associated Press offers a surprisingly candid appraisal of the Democrats' position, as they struggle to do something with their majorities in Congress:

[...]

The AP has a slightly more recent version of the same story here, which buries the account of the Democrats "flailing," but emphasizes that anti-Iraq war initiatives have stalled in both the House and the Senate. In the House, Nancy Pelosi has distanced herself (wisely) from Mad Jack Murtha's "slow bleed" strategy, and instead says: "Let me be very clear: Congress will fund our troops." In the Senate, Harry Reid has shelved, at least for now, a measure to repeal 2002's Authorization for the Use of Military Force In Iraq.

The Democrats are floundering because in reality, they don't have a policy on Iraq. ...
