US military takes Iraq war to YouTube
By Laura Smith-Spark  (H/T: Lorie Byrd)

The US military has taken the war in Iraq into cyberspace, with the launch of its own channel on the video-sharing website YouTube.

Its 25 brief clips include footage of US soldiers firing at unseen snipers in Baghdad, handing out footballs to Iraqi children and rescuing an Iraqi family injured by an explosive device.

In two months, the Multi-National Force-Iraq channel has climbed to 16th in YouTube's most subscribed-to listing and has, the military says, just passed the 1 million video views mark.

With titles like Battle on Haifa Street and Iraqi Boy Scouts Prepare for Jamboree, the clips are intended to show a "boots on the ground" perspective of Iraq, a statement on the site says. ...

Pakistan set to declare state of emergency

President Musharraf could declare a state of emergency in Pakistan amid growing civil unrest against his increasingly embattled regime.

Security forces were placed on high alert yesterday, detaining hundreds of activists on the eve of an anti-government rally in Karachi. Rival demonstrations are planned by supporters of General Musharraf, raising fears of violent clashes in the southern port city today. ...

6 Fort Dix Terror Suspects Ordered Held Without Bail

CAMDEN, N.J. —  Six men arrested this week and charged with plotting to massacre soldiers at Fort Dix were ordered held without bail on Friday.

Prosecutors argued that the men, all born outside the United States, pose a flight risk.

The men — four of them ethnic Albanians from the former Yugoslavia, one from Jordan and one from Turkey — have been held at a federal detention center in Philadelphia since their arrest Monday night. ...

Did Howard Dean order KS gov to lie about FEMA’s response to the Greensburg tornado? Update: Flat denials from the DNC, Gov Sebelius and Brownback
Allahpundit

Update: Brownback says no, making it 3 for 3.

Update: The DNC just emailed me two documents, one a letter to XM and the other a letter to Free Republic. In both letters, the DNC denies without equivocation that the conversation between Dean and Sebelius ever took place. Both are C&D notices from the DNC’s lawyers.

The statement made by Mr. Quinn is demonstrable, unequivocally, and absolutely false. Governor Dean had no such conversation with Governor Sebelius, ever.

That’s about as flat a denial as one can get, though it’s interesting that they would resort to C&D notices to combat this story and characterize it as “libelous” and “slanderous” and “interfering with the DNC’s operations and ability to solicit support and raise funds.” The Democrats as a party have been libeling and slandering President Bush with impunity for years. Perhaps the RNC should start slapping them with C&Ds.

But getting back to this story, both Gov. Sebelius and the DNC are flatly denying that the conversation between Dean and Sebelius took place as described. So consider this story killed. ...

Lorie Byrd was suspicious all along.

"I Don't Want to Come Home Until We Win"
By: Lorie Byrd

In my Townhall column this week I talk about how important it is that we don't surrender in the Iraq media war.

In Arlington last week, someone asked military blogger Jim of Sgt. Hook what he would say to those who want to support the troops by bringing them home. He said he would tell them "I don't want to come home until we win." ...

Speaking on a panel at the milblog (short for military blog) conference last weekend, Bill Roggio, who has embedded as a journalist in Iraq and Afghanistan, said it is well known through documents we have discovered that much of the enemy's strategy revolves around manipulation of the media. He said the enemy cannot beat us on the battlefield so they employ a strategy of attacks planned specifically for maximum media coverage and effect. This strategy has been quite successful.

Reuters: U.S., German officials see
no imminent terror threat in Germany

Allahpundit

I don’t know why this ABC News story suddenly exploded today. It was published two days ago in almost exactly the same form; I blogged it at the time and added a few details based on what was on the wires.

Sounds like ABC might have gotten a bad tip:

U.S. defense and counterterrorism officials, asked about the ABC News report, said they were unaware of a new threat against U.S. installations in Germany beyond a more general warning issued last month…

A U.S. counterterrorism official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, added: “The threat was taken seriously at the time and isn’t being dismissed now. But there’s nothing to suggest a new urgency to this.” ...

So, did ABC apply the 48 hours rule and still get things wrong or did Reuters Photoshop some quotes to make the story less alarming?

Mort Kondracke’s Plan B for Iraq: Ethnic cleansing by Shiites

I linked the Kondracke piece earlier but you really don't want to miss Allahpundit's comments here. Really.

Don't miss Confederate Yankee's thoughts here. It hasn't collected too many comments yet but his comment thread have been known to get quite interesting on occasion and there's still plenty of time for hti one to.

Dan Riehl has some thoughts here.

Imminent Terrorist Attack In Germany?
Ed Morrissey

ABC News reports today that American and German security agencies have gone on high alert for a terrorist attack. The target -- US military personnel or the German tourist industry:

U.S. and German officials fear terrorists are in the advanced planning stages of an attack on U.S. military personnel or tourists in Germany.  ...

This is an unusual warning, both in its existence and its specificity. Alert levels go up occasionally, depending on the intel received, but it's rare to hear about the potential targets. This sounds like the Americans and Germans have very specific and reliable intel about a particular cell, and that they have begun to close it down. That kind of action can prompt terrorists to immediately attack when they lose up-channel communication, which may be what prompted this warning.

It could also be a false positive, a way in which terrorists can check their networks. They may be conducting a mole hunt, and the reaction could assist them in clearing their six. ...

Jersey Jihadists: We're the victims!
Michelle Malkin

The Fort Dix Six were in court this morning for a bail hearing. Courier Post blogged from the courthouse.

You won't be shocked to hear that the lawyers for the Jersey Jihadist suspects are gearing up to argue entrapment:

Attorney Rocco Cipparone, who is representing defendant Mohamad Ibrahim Shnewer, whom he described as a "hardworking cab driver," said he'll look into "the role of paid informants and how aggressive they were in potentially prodding or moving things along."

Troy Archie, Eljvir Duka's lawyer, hinted at something conspiratorial this morning, suggesting there was "something wrong" with the fact that the CIs were able to infiltrate the plotters' group within a month of the feds obtaining the jihad training DVD.

That didn't take long, writes Dan Riehl.

Ace adds:

Dan has an interesting related post here.

President Open to Benchmarks in Iraq Measure
By Carle Hulse and Jim Rutenberg

WASHINGTON, May 10 — Hours before the House approved a plan on Thursday to finance the Iraq war only through midsummer, President Bush offered his first public concession to try to resolve the impasse on war spending, acknowledging rising pressure from his own party and the public.

After a briefing at the Pentagon, Mr. Bush said he had instructed Joshua B. Bolten, the White House chief of staff, to reach “common ground” with lawmakers of both parties over setting firm goals, or benchmarks, to measure progress in Iraq. Mr. Bush had previously insisted that he wanted about $95 billion for the military with no strings attached.

“It makes sense to have benchmarks as a part of our discussion on how to go forward,” Mr. Bush said, even as he threatened to veto the House plan, approved on a 221-to-205 vote Thursday night, which would require him to seek approval in two months for the balance of the war money. ...

'John Doe' protections urged for Fort Dix tipster
By Audrey Hudson

The New Jersey store clerk whose tip led to the arrest of six terror suspects needs legislative protection from being sued as a "John Doe" or whistleblower, lawmakers said yesterday.

"The events in Fort Dix are just another reminder of the need for this legislation," said Rep. Steve Pearce, New Mexico Republican and author of legislation to protect "John Doe" passengers being sued by a group of Muslim imams for reporting their suspicious behavior that got the imams removed from an airline flight. ....

Plan B For Iraq: Winning Dirty
By Mort Kondracke

Without prejudging whether President Bush's "surge" policy will work, the administration and its critics ought to be seriously thinking about a Plan B, the "80 percent solution" - also known as "winning dirty." Right now, the administration is committed to building a unified, reconciled, multisectarian Iraq - "winning clean." Most Democrats say that's what they want, too. But it may not be possible.

The 80 percent alternative involves accepting rule by Shiites and Kurds, allowing them to violently suppress Sunni resistance and making sure that Shiites friendly to the United States emerge victorious. ...
