Alien Bill Deal Puts Kennedy Name on Bush Library
Scott Ott

(2007-05-19) — If Congress were to pass the new proposed comprehensive immigration bill, Bush administration sources say Sen. Ted Kennedy will get naming rights to George W. Bush’s future presidential library as part of the deal.

“It’s only fair, since Teddy’s the architect of the Bush legacy,” said an unnamed White House source. “Sen. Kennedy was the driving force behind the ‘No Child Left Behind’ act, and now this measure to legalize illegal immigration. Historians will remember these as the watersheds of Bush-Kennedy years.” ...

The future Bush presidential library will be located in the president’s hometown of Crawford, TX, and sources said it would be built for “pennies on the dollar” by a small army of newly-legal illegal immigrants.

Republicans to base…FU! Base to Republicans…FU right back!  Immigration Bill knife in the back of base. Billary to be President ... what’s the diff?
Pierre Legrand

Well isn’t this cheery news. This means we will be seeing Billary in office in 2008 because there just isn’t anyway that the base is going to turn out after this knife in the back by the Republicans. Why turn out when the results for the most important items simply won’t change that much no matter who we put into the Whitehouse?

  • Defense spending has stayed at the same level it was when Clinton was in office. He had the excuse of no war and a hostile Congress. What was Bush’s excuse? He had a war and Republicans in both Houses for most of the time and Defense spending stayed at 3.6% of GDP.  It got lower one year under Clinton.
  • Big Government Programs…hmm lets see No Child Left Behind BOONDOGGLE after all Kennedy was involved in it. Then we have Prescription Drug benefit…BOONDOGGLE…
  • Immigration? Hell it is entirely possible that a Democrat might actually be more prone to enforcement than Bush.

The Republicans can kiss my ass in regards to money to fund this idiocy.

If you are clear-eyed about this immigration proposal you can see immediately that it is the worst sort of demagoguery to claim that you are helping the illegal’s. Consider for a moment exactly how the illegals have been doing those jobs that Americans won’t do.

  1. Undercut pay since they are off the books. Lower costs to employers
  2. Since they are unlikely to report safety violations for fear of being deported working conditions can be appalling. Lower costs for employers
  3. Since they are off the books no need for employers to pay various taxes and insurance. Lower costs for employers.
  4. Since they are unlikely to report unsafe housing conditions housing can be appalling. Lower costs for landlords.

These are just a few of the ways that illegals gain market share over legal workers when both are competing for spots in the job market. But guess what? If we legalize them then all of a sudden they have priced themselves out of the market and the demand goes up for 20 million more illegals. Because all of a sudden you cannot underpay, overwork, badly house and poorly insure the current crop of illegals since they are now on the books. Ooops. All of a sudden they are a bunch of lazy Americans who won’t do the work that illegals will do.

You do realize that the Republican Elite understand this equation right? The Democrats understand it as well. They know full well what will happen. They are making it happen. ...

Illegals deal alienates everyone
By Stephen Dinan

In forging an immigration deal this week, President Bush turned away from Republican allies in favor of striking a deal with Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, banking on the senior legislator to deliver enough Democrats to pass a bill.

But the strategy may come back to haunt him, as many Democrats said they can't accept the agreement and Republicans lined up to criticize both the deal and Mr. Bush, their party's leader.

And it may only get worse for Mr. Bush, as political forces drive the issue: Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor running for the Republican presidential nomination, injected the issue straight into 2008 presidential politics, announcing he was running television commercials calling for better enforcement as the solution to illegal immigration.

"The president's willingness to accept the granting of amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants has sent a harmful message to Republican voters around the country," said Rep. Mike Pence, Indiana Republican. "But I also believe that'll sort itself out in the primaries of 2008. At the end of the day, this is an issue where I find myself focusing less on politics than what policy I think is in the best interests of the American people."

Last year, both Mr. Pence and Sen. John Cornyn of Texas appeared to be promising allies for Mr. Bush. Mr. Pence met with the president in the Oval Office to talk about the congressman's plan to have illegal aliens leave the country and apply to re-enter from outside.

When Democrats won control of Congress, Mr. Bush tacked left, negotiating with Mr. Kennedy, Massachusetts Democrat, and producing a deal on Thursday that many Republicans say is amnesty. ...

Specifically, for defending the temporary worker provisions. Click.

Mexicans are booing the temporary worker provisions too — for being too strict. They only plan to stay for a few years, make a little coin, and then go home. Scout’s honor:

Many in Mexico — and U.S. employers who say they need workers for low-skilled jobs — had hoped Congress would expand the guestworker program and allow more to cross legally, work a few months and then return home with their savings to build homes and businesses.

Gilberto Escalante, a 41-year-old fisherman from Sinaloa state, said the current temporary visa program is better than the congressional plan because it gives Mexicans the option to freely enter and leave the U.S. while maintaining their lives in Mexico — instead of forcing them to choose between the two countries.

“We don’t want the house or the latest car in the U.S. We want to go and work so that our families can have a good life in Mexico,” said Escalante, who is seeking a visa to work on fish and shrimp boats off the coast of Mississippi.

Update: And the winner of the Georgia GOP convention straw poll is…

Update: McCain’s apprentice got his today, too:

The crowd booed South Carolina U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (news, bio, voting record), a key ally of McCain in both his 2000 and 2008 presidential bids, when he said he had worked with U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., on the immigration legislation. ...

The Business of Immigration Reform
By: Jayson Javitz

Here's one vision of immigration reform:

We will push for a comprehensive immigration reform that: increases security; has an earned pathway to legalization for undocumented workers already contributing to our economy, provided they are law-abiding and prepared to embrace the obligations and values of our society; creates a carefully monitored guest or essential worker program to fill the growing gaps in America's workforce recognizing that, in some cases, permanent immigrants will be needed to fill these gaps; and refrains from unduly burdening employers with worker verification systems that are underfunded or unworkable.

George W. Bush?

Nope.

Ted ("Whiskey") Kennedy?

Um, no.

Chuck ("What planet am I on?") Hagel?

Uh, no.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

Go figure.

Speaking of which, obviously there are major problems with the version of immigration reform currently taking shape. Chief among those problems is that although more and more border patrol officers are fine and welcome we really do need an actual, physical wall across the entire southern border. I mean a real f'n wall, Skippy. If I were in charge I'd build the second Great Wall of China down there.

On the other hand, certain aspects of the current proposal are very well taken.  ...

Bush removes provision requiring back taxes from illegal immigrants
By Michael Kranish

WASHINGTON -- The Bush administration insisted on a little-noticed change in the bipartisan Senate immigration bill that would enable 12 million undocumented residents to avoid paying back taxes or associated fines to the Internal Revenue Service, officials said.

An independent analyst estimated the decision could cost the IRS tens of billions of dollars.

A provision requiring payment of back taxes had been in the initial version of a bill proposed by Senator Edward M. Kennedy, the Massachusetts Democrat. But the administration called for the provision to be removed due to concern that it would be too difficult to figure out which illegal immigrants owed back taxes.

The dropping of the back-tax provision was not made clear in the announcement of the immigration reform proposal on Thursday. Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff, speaking in reference to illegal immigrants seeking legal status, said, "You've got to pay your taxes." He did not state whether he was referring to back taxes, future taxes, or both.

White House spokesman Scott Stanzel, asked in a telephone interview yesterday to clarify Chertoff's remark, said it referred only to future taxes.

"It is important that the reformed immigration system is workable and cost efficient," Stanzel said. "Determining the past tax liability would have been very difficult and costly and extremely time consuming."

Stanzel stressed that immigrants would be required to pay a fine of up to $5,000 if they want to apply for a green card to become a legal resident, although that fine is not for failure to pay taxes. ...

So, open-borders sellout John McCain cursed out Sen. John Cornyn. Yawn.

I didn't get all worked up about it. You know why?
