Australia to double Afghan force

Australia plans to almost double its troop numbers in Afghanistan by next year amid warnings that the Taleban insurgency shows no sign of weakening.

Prime Minister John Howard said without an extra effort, the fight against the militants would not be won. He warned the country to prepare for casualties.  ...

Aussie jihadi pleads guilty

Australian Terror Suspect Pleads
Guilty to Providing Support to Terrorism

GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba —  Australian terror suspect David Hicks pleaded guilty Monday to a war-crime charge of providing material support to terrorism in a plea bargain that will assure his transfer from Guantanamo's cells to Australia, officials said.

The 31-year-old detainee, who has spent more than five years imprisoned in Guantanamo and was accused of supporting Al Qaeda in Afghanistan, could be sentenced by the end of the week, military officials said. Defense attorneys said a gag order by the military judge prevented them from discussing details of the plea until a sentence is announced.

The United States has agreed to let Hicks serve any sentence in Australia. ...

DELAY ALMOST OVER
Tim Blair

On January 11, CBS News examined - in their own way - the case of Australian Taliban member and Gitmo homeboy David Hicks:

Today marks five years without a day in court for David Hicks ...

And why might that be? ABC national security correspondent Leigh Sales:

The Hicks defence strategy relies on delaying the process for so long that the Australian Government will be forced to ask for the prisoner’s return.

Hmm. Anyway, despite his lawyers’ delaying tactics, Hicks is shortly due to appear in a Gitmo court. Latest word is he’ll make a deal.

UPDATE. Hicks pleads guilty.

UPDATE II. The Australian reports: “Hicks is short and overweight … He did not look unhealthy and certainly not ‘gaunt’ or ‘hollowed cheeked’ as his legal team have described him in recent months.”

UPDATE III.  ...

Meat Oaf
By Sachi

This is to follow up on See-Dubya's post below: It's not just England, America, and France that have "Moslem troubles." It's every civilized country in Christendom, and several of the barbaric ones

An Australian blog, Occidentalism, has a pair of videos about an Australian imam, Taj El-Din Hilaly. Here is the first; the second is the same story by a different TV show:

According to the blogger, "Matt," Hilaly is "the leader of the majority of the Muslim community in Australia," a frightening thought indeed: if the Moslems who rioted on Cronulla Beach a year ago look to Hilaly as a great "leader," then heaven help Oz.

He is also the same imam who defended the Moslem youths who gang-raped a woman. In that context, Hilaly equated scantly clothed women with "uncovered meat" who deserve to be raped. Hilaly's remarks led to the infamous "bikini march" ....

Straight Talk on Counterterrorism from Australia
See-Dubya

John Howard's former chief of staff has a worthwhile piece in the Times of London on why their counterterror programs have been successful. It's refreshingly direct:

the Australian system takes Islamist ideology seriously. It does not deal with radical Islamists. It confronts extremists’ views, rather than seeking to co-opt “pragmatic” radicals who happen not to be in favour of the use of violence in the here and now for purely tactical reasons. After the bombings of 7/7 in London, Tony Blair declared correctly that “the rules of the game had changed”. In Australia the rules changed dramatically some time earlier.

The piece is intended for a British audience, but I know some Americans who might find these suggestions intriguing:

Meanwhile, the conservatives, with the support of social democrats, have advanced the cause of citizenship tests as a means of emphasising that all who choose to live in Australia are expected to sign-on to our democratic values. Moreover, imams have been advised to preach in English. ...

Headline of the Day
John Hinderaker

Australia: Mosque to get police guard for bikini rally. They're worried about concealed weapons, I guess.

For a more sympathetic account of the Australian bikini protest, which will occur on December 9, go here. The march is organized by Christine Hawkins, a "Melbourne grandmother." It is intended to protest comments by an Australian imam who explained rape on the ground that women in Australia walk around like "uncovered meat."

It's ironic, I think, that in the Australian Broadcasting Company story linked above, the ABC presenter describes the bikini protest as "very provocative." In another context, one might think that claiming it's OK (or understandable, anyway) to rape women not wearing burqas would be deemed "very provocative." But much of the coverage of the bikini event has focused largely on push-back from bikini opponents:

Muslims, socialists, unions and other groups will conduct a counter-rally against bikini protesters who plan to march on a Brunswick mosque on Saturday.

Muslims, check. Socialists, check. ...

Video: Aussie rape mufti misunderstood by entire planet
Allahpundit

Australia’s version of “60 Minutes” profiled him recently after his Kinsleyan gaffe about rape went global. The clip’s online but I had a hell of a hard time getting it to load, so I clipped this tiny portion for ease of reference. Be advised that it doesn’t capture the full breadth of the interview, in which he says he condemns rape, hopes that Aussie soldiers come home safe, and gives the A-OK for women to break out the bikinis at the beach. For that you’ll have to watch the feature or read the transcript.

What it does capture is the peculiar frequency with which someone who claims to hold those beliefs should find himself “misunderstood.”

[Aussie] Muslim leader blames women for sex attacks
Updated and bumped: Apology
Updated and bumped: Not sorry after all

THE nation's most senior Muslim cleric has blamed immodestly dressed women who don't wear Islamic headdress for being preyed on by men and likened them to abandoned "meat" that attracts voracious animals.

In a Ramadan sermon that has outraged Muslim women leaders, Sydney-based Sheik Taj Din al-Hilali also alluded to the infamous Sydney gang rapes, suggesting the attackers were not entirely to blame.

Aussie mufti to women:
Hey, sorry about blaming you for your own rapes

Allahpundit

He’s just looking out for you, ladies.

If he’s guilty of anything, it’s of loving too much:

Sheik Taj Aldin Alhilali apologized after The Australian detailed his comments, which compared women who do not wear Muslim headdresses to “uncovered meat” that attracts hungry animals, the Sydney Morning Herald reported Thursday. ...

“Protecting women’s honor” is virtually a science in some Muslim countries, which is one of the reasons why Wafa Sultan escaped to the west. JPost has an interview with her today about the state of feminism over there — and over here:

Are Western feminists on your side? I have encountered Americans and Israelis who - when it comes to the rights of women in Arab countries - side with multiculturalism. Has this been your experience as well? ...

Ask The Aussie Imam

Islamic Advice from Imam Yahu al-Zirius
Spiritual Leader, Fostaz al-Vegimita Mosque
Lakembabongabinga, Sydney, NSW

Sheik Taj Din al-Hilali of Mullagangabanga, NSW asks:

Some of the cobbers at my local mosque spotted some sheilas who weren't wearing their hijabs, so they naturally had a go at raping them. For some reason the coppers loaded them off to gaol! I ask you: if you take out uncovered meat and place it outside on the street, or in the garden or in the park, or in the backyard without a cover, and the cats come and eat it ... whose fault is it, the cats or the uncovered meat?

This is a very interesting question. With respect to cats, the Q’ran in Surah 12:45.1(c) states that, “the cat always lands on its paws.” However, Surah 3.14e-9 says that “pita bread always lands hummus-side down.”

Of course, the crafty infidel will see this as a contradiction: ...

Cleric 'meat' remarks spark fury

“Meat” mufti ups ante
Bryan Preston

Nice fellow. Australia’s top mufti. Compared women to “meat” and said that when it comes to rape, it’s women’s fault. Apologized taqiyya-style, then came out to tell the world what he really thinks:

AUSTRALIA’S leading Muslim cleric, Sheik Taj al-Din al-Hilaly, says he will only resign when the world is “clean of the White House”.

After emerging from Friday prayers at Lakemba Mosque today, Sheik Hilaly was asked by a media pack whether he would quit over a speech in which he said scantily-dressed women invited rape.

“After we clean the world of the White House first,” the sheik said. ...
