Some thoughts on the VA and the vet vote

From a post on my daughters blog:

It almost made me sick to hear Bush talking about how great the healthcare provided through the VA is.  My Dad has to drive hours to get to the closest VA clinic, and wait more hours to see a doctor who doesn’t listen to him and won’t give him efficient or particularly helpful medical care. Who does Bush think he is telling me that that’s good enough?

I left this comment there:

The VA health care system could definitely be improved, but even if I believed Kerry would improve it, which I don't, I'm one veteran who thinks the War on Terror is much more important than my personal well being. The veteran vote is going to go overwhelmingly for President Bush next month, for that and a lot of other reasons.

I love you, Heather. You and that little boy of yours are the center of my world. Please, listen to your daddy on this one. What does it matter if I have to wait a little for help from the VA compared to a terrorist attack on a VA clinic, or on the call center where you work, or on a school full of American children? John Kerry thinks Islamic terrorists are a "nuisance". George Bush understands there's a war on. The war comes first. There might be a veteran or an American Warrior somewhere who disagrees with me, but there are damned few of them.

Daddy, I love you. And I know that you love me and want me to be safe. But you also want me to be independent and strong, and so no, I can't just listen to you on this one. If I were willing to cede heartfelt beliefs or carefully researched evidence just to make someone (even someone I love) feel better, I wouldn't be the person that you and Mom taught me to be. I don't believe that Bush is making me safer. I believe he is not only alienating our allies, but inciting terrorism around the world. The Islamist terrorists hate us for a reason. It's not because we are free, it's because we act as the world police. I am not saying that it is our fault, by any means, but I think that attacking every country that has hopes of a WMD program or a member of Al Qaeda in it (more than 60 countries at this point) is only going to make those extremists hate us more. It is also going to ensure that my son is forced to go to war, whether he wants to or not. There are not enough soldiers to fight 60 countries for the next half a century. What's worse is that he is practically ignoring the countries that are a danger to us, like N. Korea and Iran. He took the focus off of bin Laden. The man who is responsible for blowing up the WTC is still at large and all of our resources are being devoted to trying to restore order to Iraq. Did you read my post about the fact that he had the chance to take out Al-Zarqawi, but decided not to because he thought it would weaken his case for going to war? I think Bush is psychotic. I know that he is dangerous. And I truly believe in my heart that he is a threat to my son's safety and well being. For now, I will be satisfied with voting him out of office. If harm comes to Ian as a direct result of something he did...well, it won't be pretty. So no, I can't just listen to you on this one. I love you.

I don't know how to do a trackback but I posted this conversation on my web site.
