Remembering the Challenger 7

My personal life was in turmoil twenty years ago and my memories of the Challenger disaster probably aren't as clear as some other people's. Still, I remember my shock and disbelief I felt when I first heard what had happened and my growing anger as word trickled out that it had been avoidable. Engineers within NASA tried to get the launch scrubbed, warning of just the sort of seal failure that actually happened due to too-low overnight temperatures, and management ignored them. If it had been up to me, the people who made the decision to go ahead and launch would have done some major jail time.

Fox and CNN have some history here and here.

Michelle Malkin has a good link round-up here.

As I surf the web and read what others have to say about this, I realize the pain, and the anger, I felt back then are still a long way from gone. Along with my other memories, something reminded me of turning away and fighting back tears as my 4 year old nephew (now Lt. Robert L. Faith Jr., USAF, I'm proud to say) stood his toy Space Shuttle on its tail, made appropriate rocket noises as he slowly lifted it about 3 feet in the air, then yelled "Boom!" and dropped it.

Don't understand why I'm still angry after 20 years? Please read Dr Sanity's 20 YEARS AFTER CHALLENGER - The Dream Is Alive.

Jay at Stop The ACLU's not a lot older than Robbie. Please read his post here on what it was like to be a child watching the launch on TV in his 3rd Grade classroom when the disaster happened.

Twenty years ago today, the Challenger space shuttle blew apart on live television before a stunned nation. At the time, I was simply too young to fully grasp what had happened, but I do vaguely remember my parents trying to explain it to me. [Read More]
