Bush Defends UAE Port Takeover Despite Mounting Opposition


Bush Says He Will Veto Any Bill to Stop UAE Port Deal

WASHINGTON β€” In a rare threat to use his veto power, President Bush said Tuesday he will stop any legislation that attempts to prevent the purchase by a United Arab Emirates-owned firm of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Co., which runs six major U.S. ports.

I'll admit to being more than a little confused, at this point. My initial reaction to the idea of a foreign company running our ports was very negative, but I find that puts me at odds with some people for whom I have a great deal of respect. (On the other hand, Jimmy Carter is in favor of the deal ...) I'd rather see an American company in control of all of our ports, but short of Dafydd's proposal to create a company for that purpose (the phrase "Post Office" comes to mind) that simply isn't in the cards. Color me undecided at this point.
