Dome of the Golden Mosque Destroyed

From Bill Roggio's Fourth Rail:

Dome of the Golden Mosque Destroyed

al-Qaeda likely conducted attacks; attack can lead to civil war or provide opportunity for Sunnis and Shiites to unite; al-Qaeda may have made yet another miscalculation

The attempt to drag Iraqi’s Shiites and Sunnis into a bloody civil war intensifies. The dome of the Shiite Al Askari Mosque in Samarra, or Golden Mosque, has been destroyed by a well planned and well executed commando-style raid of insurgents dressed as Iraqi police. According to CNN, “A group of men dressed like Iraqi police commandos set off explosives.” It appears suspects are now in custody, “Ten people -- all dressed as Iraqi police commandos.”

Michelle Malkin has more here.

Wretchard at Belmont Club summarizes the situation well:

The good news is that there are enough cools heads on both sides to try to keep the lid on. That fact alone attests to the accomplishment of those who have tried to build a unitary Iraq. The bad news is that the pressures -- stoked by parties unknown, though Iraq the Model suggests they are "foreign terror groups" -- may be too much to handle. The description above depicts a city going into voluntary and involuntary lockdown and implies, to me at least, the average Joe doesn't want the streets to run with blood.

This is going to be a test for the security apparatus of Iraq. My own hunch is that they will need to identify the perps quickly and hunt them down so that Iraqi society can confidently repose the task of justice to the authorities. The problem will be if the perps are across some nearby border.

Fortunately Grand Ayatollah Sistani and Muqtada al-Sadr, the two Shia leaders with enough influence to set off a full-blown civil war, are both urging restraint, at least for now. I'll be optimistic and hope this incident will have positive effects in the long run, by uniting Iraqis, Sunni and Shiite, against the terrorists in their midst. Time will tell.
