I'm a 49 year old man, Son of a Vietnam era aviator, an assault helicopter pilot, and he retired a bird Colonel in '73. Dad, Mom, and us kid's sat around at night discussing the happening's of the day in our country and around the world, often political matter's came up. We attended a non-denominational church our parent's believed "religion" was a personal decision, but they also believed that we would do better to be at the very least exposed to the church setting. Every Christmas our parent's would provide a list of poor military families whose children would definitely do without and allow the three of us kid's pick who we would help. Food, gift's, repair's whatever the need was is what we assisted this family with, and to keep from embarassing the family there was a drop point for pickup. We were involved in scout's, baseball, football, wrestling, debate, you name it we tried it, and usually stuck with it. Each of us were honor student's and who's who in American High School's, and grad's from the University of Texas. The point of a list of accolades like these is in honor of our parent's who raised a family of good citizen's. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Fast forward to now, I look back and even as a child during the Vietnam year's the American public was together in support of our young men, there was a group of young people, some called it a peace movement, other's called them hippies, but they were the people who were seen as generally disrespectful to the establishment to include the military and the troops, who became entangled in that disrespect. But, the rest of us were just people, friend's, neighbor's, American's, and the disharmony was being played out in both houses of the Congress, we saw it playout during the evening news, and read about it in the daily news, Time, and Newsweek magazine's. In the 60's and 70's the House and Senate were a proxy for the privately held feeling's of many everyday citizen's, and that allowed people to coexist happily.----Today, well today is an entirely different story, everybody has access, whether through cable, satellite, dsl, dialup, or just television, enabling more people to be involved in the process, but yet create's a supply of more vociferous, agitated, radical source's of content. I'm running out of time here so I'll cut to the point, there are a lot of people out there providing "content" full of ideological hatred, divisiveness, and madness in some cases that is destroying the fabric of our country, my way or the highway, us or them, patriotic or traitor, harmful word's, the seed's of unrest , the ripping of our fabric, and for what? In 2007 I only hear noise, no direction only finger pointing, accusation's, just vile disgusting language. Our once peaceful country is simmering below line of sight, and unless this talk stops I fear this lapsing into something much worse. zach, U.S. Coast Guard retired-major 26 year's.
